Torrance, CA, USA – July 13, 2022 – GITAI Japan Inc., a space robotics startup, has been selected as the Innovation Showcase Company in the Japan-US Innovation Awards co-sponsored by the Japan Society of Northern California (JSNC) and the Stanford University US–Asia Technology Management Center. On July 14, Chief Robotics Officer, Dr. Nakanishi, will make a speech at the awards ceremony to be held on the campus of Stanford University.

Japan – US Innovation Awards have two categories. The Emerging Leader Award will be presented to a company having a credible Japan – U.S. link that is young, dynamic, growing, and entrepreneurial. The previous winners are, for example, Tesla(2011), Dropbox(2016), and Mercari(2016). The Innovation Showcase recognizes up to five Japanese startup companies built around exciting new technologies and innovative business ideas that have the potential for major worldwide impact. Past Showcase nominees include WHILL (2015), Preferred Networks (2016), and Treasure Data (2017).

The reasons for our selection as an Innovation Showcase company are:

  • Completed a technology demonstration of a GITAI autonomous space robot executing various tasks inside the ISS (International Space Station) Nanoracks Bishop Airlock
  • Research and development of a robotic arm for a manned pressurized rover nicknamed “LUNAR CRUISER” for mobility on the Moon, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation(TOYOTA).
  • Opened a US headquarters office in Los Angeles, CA, and announced a full-scale recruitment drive to support the expansion of US business.

■ Lunar Robotic Rover R1. It conducted a successful demonstration at JAXA’s Mock Lunar Surface Environment.

GITAI continues to develop space robotics actively, applying the space robotic technologies obtained through the successful technical demonstration in the ISS last year, and the extra-vehicular technical demonstration outside of the ISS planned in 2023. Based on the space-proven technology acquired by the demonstrations in space, we have been contracting various customer missions, such as joint development with TOYOTA and orders from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.

About GITAI’s expansion into the United States
GITAI has rapidly grown in capabilities and scope since its founding five years ago, beginning with the development of sophisticated robotic arms for deployment in harsh space environments. GITAI established a partnership with TOYOTA for building a pressurized lunar rover as a part of agreement between Japan Space Agency and NASA and a contract from the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.  GITAI also successfully executed a robotic arm demonstration in the International Space Station together with the US space company, Nanoracks.

■ About GITAI
GITAI is a relatively small but rapidly growing company.  Over half of our full-time employees have PhDs in engineering and science and three are former research associates from the University of Tokyo and former NASA employees. Our company executives successfully built and sold their companies including Google and American Express.
GITAI has many exciting projects at various levels of development and testing, from early concepts to laboratory prototypes to our technical demonstration robot currently deployed in a commercial module of the International Space Station;

– Space Station Support:
GITAI robotic arms with tool changers can be tailored to optimize the dexterity for required applications such as solar panel assembly, repetitive gearing, moving, repairing, payload transfer, human EVA support, modules and spacecraft docking support.

– On-orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing:
Our non-satellite services include space debris removal to protect satellite constellations. Debris removal is carried out by direct capture or by orbital modification using laser injection and ablation.  Debris removal enables companies to maintain reliable satellite systems while avoiding disruptive satellite maneuvering or costly replacement.  Our robotic arm satellite services include fueling, assembly, and manufacturing, directly to satellites.

– Establishing Permanent Human Presence on the Moon and Mars:
Including inspection on the Moon and Mars, we will conduct construction work on the Lunar Surface Station in support of NASA’s In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) program. We are developing specialized rovers based on our GITAI’s prototype Rover. GITAI’s ultimate goal is to enable high capability, reliable, low-cost operations on the lunar surface.

GITAI Japan, Inc., developing general-purpose robots for space applications, has developed a robot module that can conduct various tasks in the harsh space environment (ex. outside of space stations, LEO) and it has been going through environmental testing (TVAC, vibration, radiation, etc.) under conditions that simulate the LEO environment. In February 2022, the GITAI robot successfully conducted a variety of tasks inside the JAXA 8m thermal vacuum (TVAC) chamber, and we release a video of it here.
*ISAM = In-space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing

Demonstration of the GITAI Autonomous Robot inside the JAXA 8m TVAC Chamber

During February 7 – 11, 2022, the GITAI autonomous robot conducted an ISAM activities demonstration inside the 8m TVAC chamber at JAXA’s Tsukuba Space Center.
The GITAI developed ISAM 2m robotic arm / robot system conducted assembly tasks such as putting together a solar panel, and ORU (orbital replacement unit) exchange tasks both autonomously and successfully.
A 14 hours endurance test was also conducted and the system operated flawlessly until the end.
